I Can't Stand the Rain
Honestly, I enjoy a good storm. It’s my daughter that can’t stand the rain.
I think of this song just about every time it rains.
Here in Iowa, along the Mississippi river, we’ve had so much rain, and so many storms so far this spring. There have been flash flood warnings with every storm. Businesses have gone under (bad pun) due to flooding. It’s been heartbreaking as many of the businesses that suffered were unique and independent small businesses. It’s been good to see the community come together to help those businesses that have managed to stay afloat (again, bad pun).
We’re just coming off about three or four days of storms with tornado watches.
Yesterday was one of those days where we had several storms move through the area.
With my daughter’s issues with rain… It’s more than just the normal “I can’t stand the rain!” She has some pretty profound auditory sensory issues. It becomes hysteria when there’s any kind of “alert,” “watch,” or “warning” attached to the rain. Thunder and lightning have her pretty much as close to me as she can get throughout the storm. Loud thunder booms have her shrieking. She wears noise cancelling headphones anytime it rains. Even when it’s just sprinkling or misting. It’s been a time folks. Exhausting. For her as well as me. I can see the storms wearing on her.
But, back to music. This weekend, after playing “I Can’t Stand the Rain” loud enough for my oldest to come upstairs and turn it down on me, I was feeling a bit Stevie Nicks (and secretly wanted to see what my daughter thought of her {she has issues with music as well, but that’s for another time}), so I was playing some Stevie Nicks/Fleetwood Mac on my kitchen laptop while doing dishes and cooking a brunch (which is my lazy way of cutting down on weekend cooking) when this came up:
Of course the lyrics “Thunder only happens when it’s raining” stuck out to me immediately.
Then, last night as I sat down to work, I did my usual quick peruse of Facebook to procrastinate a bit, and a friend had posted this:
Whoops! And then I was down a rabbit hole, and thankful that I had done a good chunk of my work during the afternoon… A couple of hours later, I emerged with a “rain” themed YouTube Playlist. It’s not exhaustive. I purposely omitted some older songs: Singing in the Rain, It’s Raining Men, and Country songs…and some songs I didn’t really want or need to hear. I did include some that made me laugh (Milli Vanilli especially!). It was a fun list. It brought me back to quite a few songs that I absolutely love from my adolescence and from the 80s MTV days (when they played music videos)!
Enjoy!
